Barbara Ann Bush, PhD

Barbara Ann Bush, PhD, was born in Sacramento, CA, into a Swiss-American family that valued education, culture, and community. Her upbringing in multicultural environments instilled a love for languages, traditions, and lifelong learning. After exploring careers from theater to electrical work, she earned a master’s in Intercultural Communication (CSU Sacramento) and a PhD in Communication Studies (UC San Diego). Following her father’s path in teaching, she worked at UC San Diego, University of San Diego, Miramar College, and at Big Bend Community College, where she also chaired Equity, Inclusion & Diversity initiatives and helped organize Moses Lake’s first Pride parade. In 2023, after her brother’s passing, she and her spouse David Simmons fulfilled a dream of moving to Switzerland. Now Barbara is Principal of The British School Bern and also teaches English locally. How Barbara would sum up her perspective is: “Love hard. Think big. Do the footwork. Remember community.”
